Sensory Room

Sensory Room
Our sensory room is accessible for all children at Footsteps. Staff are trained to make the most of the resources we provide.
Within this room the children can explore light through the array of lighting available, projectors, fibre optics, bubble tube and more hands on equipment such as touches and light up balls.

Sound is explored though natural music, the hanging chimes and musical instruments. The children can explore these in different ways during play.

Natural resources are used to promote children’s creative and critical thinking, we provide a variety of items to get the children thinking about textures, shapes, sizes ect.

Our sensory room can also be used for small group activities or for new starters to spend time with their keyworker.

The sensory room is designed to stimulate and encourage the senses:

Tiny Feet: Child Care For 0-2 Years

Situated on the ground floor, Tiny Feet has been separately designed to care for children aged 0-2 years. Furnished to very high standards, it provides stimulating activities for both babies and tots.

We carefully consider all babies’ needs and can accommodate any requirements including preparing feeds and mealtimes. A separate and secure kitchen unit is located within the Tiny Feet room, so feeds can be prepared and stored safely.

We keep a full record of nappy changes, feeds and sleeps and encourage parents and families to provide as much information as possible so we can mirror home routines.

A sleep area with cots and sleeping mats is always available and a separate nappy changing room provides easy access for toilet and wash facilities that helps to maintain our high staff to children ratio. Nappies should be provided by parents and are kept in individual named boxes for each child.

Within the unit we provide the children with a lilac cosy area, full of cushions and duvets, lilac is a calming colour for babies and promotes rest and calm time. The children are also provided with stories and personal photo books from home to explore whilst resting.

Our Red, White and Black exploration area is full of open ended resources for the babies to explore and manipulate, the contrasting visual colours holds attention for longer periods and promotes sensory development, the babies love to explore the different objects and textures provided.

Twinkle Toes: Child Care For 2-3 Years

Twinkle Toes is on the first floor and has been specially designed to care for children aged 2-3 years. At this age, children begin to seek independence and our unit offers them the structure and stimulus they need through fun and learning.

The principles of the prime areas of the Early Years Foundation Stages are incorporated through planned and play-based structured activities, designed to meet the needs of each individual child. We compile and record detailed observations and assessments for each child.

A cosy corner ensures that children may rest at any time. When the time is right, we can help with toilet training.

Outside Play Facilities

Footsteps Nursery has a large outdoor play area. It is fenced off to provide a safe and secure environment at all times. With its spacious grassed area and flat safe surface, it’s ideal for push and pedal toys/vehicles.

Due to the design of our garden we always go outside, whatever the weather, so please provide your child with suitable clothing such as wellies, sun hats etc.

We bring the indoors out and have the following:
• An aviary
• Digging pit
• Musical area
• Cosy den
• Allotment
• Sensory garden
• Sand pit
• Mud Kitchen

The garden has a variety of physical areas including a digging pit where the children can use the tools and dress up to role play. A mud kitchen which is always a hit as children love to get messy, they make meals and have fun sieving the mud changing its texture by adding water.

The allotment and sensory garden is looked after by the children on a daily basis, using this area we can encourage the use of senses and promote healthy choices.

Our tepee provides a cosy area for the children to have quiet time when outdoors, we provide factual books for the children to talk about outdoors such as weather books as well as insect and bird books to inspire the children to go bug hunting.
